Women and the Sea. Sitges, 2008
Lecture- conversation organized by the Sea Studies Center in Barcelona, which was held on December 11st, 2008 in Sitges with the aim of deepening the relationship that women and the sea have in Galician lands. Natalia Laiño, Secretary General of Agamar, has been in charge of moving the public Catalan the reality and the evolution of Galician shell fish woman, from its beginnings to the present. It was made aware of how the activity shellfish has been the victim of the not professional activity for years, as well as the lack of projects that take into account the dominant role of women in the shellfish sector. However, the situation has changed, and today, shellfish (as a profession) is an activity of great importance in the Galician economy, these products being known and appreciated throughout the world. The shellfish have become more rights and have significantly improved their working conditions and economic conditions, but the fight has not been easy. Our General Secretary stressed the importance of the organization and the collective conscience of two basic pillars in achieving these improvements. “The shellfish have gone from thinking individually to do so with a collective mentality, to convert a number of scattered voices and quiet in a common voice that deserves to be heard,” she said. In addition, she emphasized that the achievement of these improvements is not at odds with the fact that the shellfish activity remains one of the most respectful of the environment, contributing to a sustainable resource. All this makes the activity shellfish, with a residual role in other regions, was set up in Galicia as the paradigm to be followed by other communities and countries of similar characteristics. Agamar took the opportunity to influence the importance of training and prevention in the shellfish field, referring to the recent draft that Agamar being conducted in collaboration with other organisms, which consists of the design and development of two protective equipment, With whom it is intended to prevent or reduce certain disorders and illnesses associated with the activity shellfish. The economic benefits of shellfish, the most abundant species, the arts used to do the shellfish activity or the form of working of Galician women of the sea were other items that the leader of Agamar outlined in Sitges, while viewing a video demonstration of shellfish in Galicia. |
Madrid High- Level Meeting on Food Security for All. Madrid, 2009
Conferences convened by the Prime Minister, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and S General Secretary of ONU Ban Ki-Moon, held on 26th and 27th of January in Madrid to discuss progress and next steps to leading to achieve compliance with the commitments made at the last summit in Rome. Representatives from various organizations around the world and governments in over 100 countries have gathered in this event to try to devise measures against short-and long-term food crisis. This meeting is a continuation of the conference held in Rome in June 2008, organized by the United Nations Food and Agriculture (FAO), in which the President of the Spanish Government announced its commitment to host our country this new reunion on “food security for all.” In this regard, Rodriguez Zapatero believes that one of the first commitments to be taken by the international community to eradicate world hunger is to increase the budget spent on food and agriculture policies in developing countries, which currently only 3% Global development aid goes to agriculture and livestock of poor countries, compared with 18% going into 1980. This event is meant as the perfect framework for present and reviews various options to accelerate the achievement of results through greater involvement of public policy to the policy of knowledge, incorporating a greater number of partners, increasing the investment of public resources and private partners to achieve greater effectiveness in achieving results. However, in the midst of this global economic crisis, few countries have announced measures (or other measures) to combat world hunger and achieving food sovereignty. In this sense, the two goals that founded this reunion (review the extent of progress since the last summit in Rome and build a global alliance for Agriculture and Food Security) have not been settled satisfactorily. In addition, since the NGO Coordinating D-Spain, have been unhappy with the meeting, mainly due to the lack of permissiveness in participation. As proposed by this body has highlighted: – raise hunger from a rights approach and the right to food – the vital participation of civil society in the design and implementation of policies against poverty – for the fishing and agriculture, ensuring environmental sustainability – the need to address the urgent situation of the people most affected by malnutrition, especially women and children – including all the processes and decisions in a global picture of coherent policies, especially in areas such as debt, trade and migration – the need for the international system to address this problem from full transparency and accountability. It is necessary to take these considerations into account and act together and from the union and that, to continue, it runs the risk of decay and lack of credibility of the international meetings. With regard to interventions that have occurred throughout the two-day conference, the highlight of Miguel Angel Moratinos, Minister of Foreign Affairs in Spain, which has proposed creating a new mechanism to channel additional resources for agriculture and nutrition programs, always looking for the coordination and transparency. For his part, Jacques Diouf, FAO Director-General, said that the biggest challenge is not only “ensure food for 963 million hungry people, but also to feed in 2050 to 9,000 million people.” According to Diouf, it is necessary to double global food production and investment in agriculture. The appearance of Ban Ki-Moon has been more optimistic and said that to eradicate hunger, “we have the wealth and knowledge to do what is necessary for everyone’s efforts and keep hunger at the center of the political objectives.” Finally, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, at the close of the event, confirmed the commitment of Spanish development aid and has announced a contribution of 1.000 billion euros over the next five years to combat hunger and promote sustainable agriculture..
